TRAVEL QUESTIONS

FAQS

Is there a downside to using a travel agent?

There really isn’t. Whether it’s a package to a tropical location, a group tour, a cruise, or a complex, customized trip, Young Travel & Cruises saves clients time, prevents mistakes and oversights, and adds value you wouldn’t get if booking on your own.

  • Young Travel & Cruises handles hours of research, coordination, and follow-up that clients don’t have time or energy for.
  • Young Travel & Cruises’ strong relationships can mean upgraded rooms, added perks, and in-travel support if something goes wrong.
  • Young Travel & Cruises aims to become a long-term partner vs a one-time booking engine.

What is a typical fee for a travel agent?

All fees are guidelines only and may be adjusted, reduced, or waived based on the scope of the trip and situation.

Non-package services such as airline, car rental, or concierge planning may be billed at $100 per hour, while travel insurance assistance is typically provided at no additional charge.

Planning fees typically begin around $300–$400 for customized/private tours or hotel packages and generally include research and up to three itinerary options. More complex trips or additional itinerary research may involve added fees, often in the $100–$125 range per itinerary.

Group and international travel can involve additional coordination and may include per-room fees, commonly around $100 for domestic trips and $150 for international trips. Non-package services such as airline, car rental, or concierge planning may be billed at about $100 per hour. View the full details in our Planning Services Policy.

Is it best to book through a travel agent?

For simple, one-night stays or a few nights in a hotel, booking yourself may be fine. (Young Travel & Cruises even has a self-book option for hotels that will include Young Travel & Cruises Virtuoso amenities) But for luxury, multi-stop or once-in-a-lifetime trips, working with a travel agent always leads to an elevated and stress-free experience. Travel agents can provide support and advocacy that booking on your own simply doesn’t, especially when multiple destinations, hotels, or experiences are involved.

  • Trips are thoughtfully planned with logistics, personal preferences, and visions in mind.
  • Travel agents advocate for clients before, during, and after travel and have strong relationships with Young Travel & Cruises suppliers.
  • Young Travel & Cruises has access to a wide, global network and can often offer access to perks you won’t find online.

What exactly does a travel agent do?

Travel agents do far more than book hotels and flights. The role of Young Travel & Cruises is to create a seamless overall experience that fits how our clients actually want to travel – with careful attention to detail.

  • Travel Agents vet hotels, guides, tour operators, and cruise lines based on firsthand knowledge and trusted partners.
  • Young Travel & Cruises coordinates complex itineraries, transfers, and special requests (even restaurant reservations!)
  • Young Travel & Cruises prides itself on being available if plans change or issues arise while traveling.

How to find a reputable travel advisor?

Not all advisors are the same, so it’s important to work with someone who has experience, strong industry relationships, excellent reviews, and a stellar reputation.

  • Look for Google reviews.
  • Look for Virtuoso reviews.
  • See how long the agency has been in business. Young Travel & Cruises has been assisting travel enthusiasts since 1988.
  • Look for an affiliation with a respected network like Virtuoso and ask how long the agency has been affiliated. Young Travel & Cruises has been affiliated with Virtuoso for over 20 years.
  • Check for long-term client relationships, referrals, and repeat business.
  • Clients should expect their travel advisors to have a clear planning process and thoughtful questions about your travel style. You’ll want to look for a consultive approach vs a one-size-fits- all itinerary.

What is the difference between travel agents and advisors?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but a travel advisor typically takes a more customized approach, especially in the luxury space.

  • Advisors focus on personalization and relationships vs. transactions.
  • Advisors have deep relationships within the travel industry and with their preferred partners.
  • The goal of advisors is a seamless experience, not simply a booked trip. Young Travel & Cruises strives for above and beyond and are there every step of the way.

Is it cheaper to book a holiday direct or through a travel agent?

It depends on what “cheaper” really means. While the base rate may sometimes look similar online, booking through a travel agent delivers more overall value – especially for luxury travel – once you factor in added perks, expert guidance. An agent will save you hours of time and provide a stress-free experience. Self-book luxury hotels here for complimentary Virtuoso amenities.

  • You won’t find preferred partner complimentary amenities like breakfast, upgrades, and resort or shipboard credits if booking online.
  • Clients can expect costly mistakes to be avoided through Young Travel & Cruises expert planning and attention to detail.
  • Tour operators often have negotiated rates for hotels or air, which may even be less expensive than online published rates.

Is Virtuoso a travel agent?

Virtuoso itself isn’t a travel agency – it’s an invitation-only global network of top-tier travel agents, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, DMCs (Destination Management Companies), and other travel specialists – and the network as a whole has a focus on luxury travel. When clients work with a Virtuoso agent, they’re working with an expert who has access to the benefits, knowledge, and relationships throughout the network.

  • Agencies and suppliers are vetted for experience and professionalism prior to acceptance in the network and are continuously monitored for excellence and held to a high standard.
  • Virtuoso members have access to luxury hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators worldwide and focus on strong alignments with Young Travel & Cruises partners which then creates a seamless experience for our valued clients.
  • Virtuoso agents add value and advocacy that don’t exist outside of the Young Travel & Cruises network.

Is Virtuoso only for luxury travel?

Virtuoso is best known for luxury travel, but it’s also about quality, experience, service, influence, reliability, and partnership. Trips range from special occasion splurges to thoughtfully planned, well-executed vacations. It works especially well for milestone trips, complex itineraries, and VIP experiences.

  • Virtuoso’s focus is on personalization and elevated service and creating bucket-list travel through the finest suppliers around the world.
  • The Virtuoso network is made up of experts throughout the industry and collectively contains a vast amount of destination knowledge and travel-planning experience.
  • Value also comes through perks, upgrades, relationships, and a common goal of seamless planning.

How does Virtuoso travel differ from regular travel?

Virtuoso travel is relationship driven. Instead of anonymous online bookings, clients benefit from behind-the-scenes connections that enhance every part of a trip and help to create an elevated VIP experience. Virtuoso members and suppliers have a common belief that travel is anything but “one-size fits-all” and strive for every trip to be a well-executed, bucket list adventure.

  • Key differences clients notice include preferred partner perks like breakfast, upgrades, and resort or shipboard credits,
  • Priority treatment and support if plans change or issues arise during travel,
  • Trips designed around the traveler preferences and vision rather than a template
  • Guidance on booking terms and cancellation policies, with a reminder to proceed with caution when booking online, as some reservations may be nonrefundable or have stricter cancellation terms than those offered when booking through an agency
